The Rasa Quartet Violinists Maura Shawn Scanlin and Kiyoshi Hayashi, violist Emma Powell, and cellist Mina Kim are the Rasa String Quartet. Connecting music and storytelling, Rasa creates original programs that are inspired by a variety of cultures and appeal to a broad audience. In Sanskrit, the term ‘RASA’ refers to the profound power of any art form to inspire an emotional response in the reader or listener so it’s no surprise that their concerts invite listeners to open their ears and listen with new curiosity. Past Rasa musical collaborators have included Celtic harpist, Maeve Gilchrist, singer-songwriter, Keith Murphy, and Hardanger Fiddler, Dan Trueman; Past venues and festivals include Rockport Music, the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival in North Carolina, WGBH, WBUR, and Brian O’Donovan’s Rockport Celtic Festival; plus artistic and educational residencies at a variety of institutions including UMass Dartmouth and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada. Members of Rasa include graduates of the New England Conservatory, the Shepherd School of Music, and Yale University. Rasa is the 2022-23 ensemble in residence at Phillips Exeter Academy (NH) and the winner of the 2022 Associazione Europea Di Musica E Comunicazione International Chamber Music Competition (Italy,) the 2021 Music Teachers National Association Chamber Music Competition (ATL,) and the 2020 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition (OH.)
