Lento – Allegro moderato (G minor 2. Allegro scherzando (C minor) 3. Andante (E-flat major) 4. Allegro mosso (G major) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In Honor of Rachmaninov's 150th anniversary Sonata for Cello & Piano in G minor The Sonata for Cello in G minor was Rachmaninov’s last chamber work and was dedicated to his friend, the eminent Russian cellist Anatoliy Brandukov, who performed its premiere -- with Rachmaninov himself playing the piano part, which demanded the composer's own extraordinary level of proficiency. Most of the themes of the sonata are introduced by the piano, and then repeated and embellished by the cello. As a result it is often referred to as the "Sonata in G minor for Cello and Piano." |
