MVCMS is excited to announce the return of our annual Thanksgiving Concert.
It is our first presenting an orchestra and our first held at the MV Performing Arts Center.
We are also pleased to offer this concert on November 20, the Saturday before Thanksgiving,
so that both residents and visitors who come to their favorite Island for Thanksgiving week may attend.
Mark your calendars!
The Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra
Founded in 2018, the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra has already made its mark. In 2019 it was named the “Best New Cultural Attraction” by Yankee Magazine and in 2020 the orchestra took home First prize in the American Prize Competition for Orchestral Performance. CCCO’s focus is on Cape collaborations with artists and art centers: the Harwich Guild of Artists, the Edward Gorey House, the Whydah Pirate Museum, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, the Heritage Museums & Gardens, poet Judith Wyeth. They now add Martha's Vineyard and the MVCMS to this list. They have presented dozens of concerts and commissioned and premiered works from participants in their young composer residency. CCCO Founder and Director Matthew Scinto brings with him a extensive background in conducting -- the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, Symphoria, the New Haven Civic Orchestra, the Brandeis-Wellesley Orchestra, the Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras, the Miami Music Festival Orchestra, the Syracuse University Symphony, and the Boston University Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. A recent review in Boston Music Intelligencer applauded his style: “Without a baton and using economical gestures to indicate phrasing and direction, Scintos conducting was refreshing and exhuberant. “ We hope you’ll join us on November 20th at the Performing Arts Center for the CCCO Vineyard debut concert, including works both classic and contemporary. |
The Program:
Entr’acte - Caroline Shaw Concerto Grosso, Op. 6: No. 4 in A Minor – George Frederic Handel Intermission Romanian Folk Dances - Bela Bartok Serenade for Strings – Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Program Notes: The MVCMS 2021 Thanksgiving Concert starts with Caroline Shaw's Entr'acte. Caroline Shaw is a young American Pulitzer Prize-winning composer currently based in NYC and Western Mass. Her music is original yet easy to listen to and spans classical to pop (having performed several times with Kanye West). Shaw writes: "Entr’acte was written in 2011 after hearing the Brentano Quartet play Haydn’s Op. 77 No. 2 — with their spare and soulful shift to the D-flat major trio in the minuet. It is structured like a minuet and trio, riffing on that classical form but taking it a little further. I love the way some music (like the minuets of Op. 77) suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition.”. The Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra also performs Bartok's Romanian Folk Dances, Handel’s Concerto Grosso in A minor, and concludes the concert with Tchaikovsky’s thrilling Serenade for Strings. Masks are required indoors at this location.
